Description

Haruomi Hosono’s first solo album after the breakup of YMO, released on the Non-Standard label that he established in 1984. It was a masterpiece that drew attention as a work that took a step away from the sound that had been practiced by YMO up to that point and quickly embodied the latest methodology of expressing techno digitally by making full use of computers.

Artist Bio

Van Dyke Parks, who first met Hosono in Los Angeles in 1972, compares his old friend to artists like Harry Nilsson and Ry Cooder, whose works are in categories all their own. “All of these nails that stuck out at that time were, to me, exemplary,” Parks said in a recent interview. “I heard that, in Japan, the tendency is to hammer down the nails that stick out. I think that Haruomi Hosono is a nail that sticks out. And has maintained that.”

Born and raised in central Tokyo as the grandson of the only Japanese survivor of the Titanic, Hosono’s young obsession with American pop culture informed his early forays into country and surf music.
