Against the backdrop of the disco music boom of the time, "Spinach Power" was a disco rock band that released seven singles and three albums between 1978 and 1981. They made their debut in September 1978 with the single "POPEYE THE SAILORMAN." The band’s name is thought to derive from the “spinach power” that Popeye eats to power himself up. While the lineup shifted depending on the release and activity period and their musical style was diverse, the band produced figures who would later leave a significant mark on the Japanese music scene, including Tetsuro Oda (vocals), Shuichi Teranishi (vocals), Mamoru Kimura (drums), and Shingo Haruyama (bass).
The album being reissued here, "IN and OUT," is the band’s third album, originally released in September 1980. The lineup for this album featured Shuichi Teranishi (vocals), Tetsuya Nomura (lead guitar, chorus), Shion Morishita (acoustic guitar, chorus), Susumu Nakaji (steel guitar, chorus), Shingo Haruyama (bass), and Mamoru Kimura (drums). The original catalog number was K28A-16, and it was released on the BILLBOX label, a sub-label of Seven Seas Records, which was King Records’ Western music imprint at the time. The album includes tracks such as the lead single "Hot Summer Rain" (lyrics by Daimon Natsuki, music by Tetsuya Nomura), as well as "Movie Theater," "Style," and "TELEPHONE." The sound further deepens early disco rock and can be heard as a dawn of Japanese rock that would soon sweep through the 1980s.
