Description

A collaboration project with Atelier Archimia, a team of Milanese designers, for the “Japan Avant-Garde of the Future” exhibition held in Genoa, Italy, in 1985. The 13 pieces were improvised while looking at photographs of the 13 sculptures they designed.

Artist Bio

Van Dyke Parks, who first met Hosono in Los Angeles in 1972, compares his old friend to artists like Harry Nilsson and Ry Cooder, whose works are in categories all their own. “All of these nails that stuck out at that time were, to me, exemplary,” Parks said in a recent interview. “I heard that, in Japan, the tendency is to hammer down the nails that stick out. I think that Haruomi Hosono is a nail that sticks out. And has maintained that.”

Born and raised in central Tokyo as the grandson of the only Japanese survivor of the Titanic, Hosono’s young obsession with American pop culture informed his early forays into country and surf music.
