As Lenny Kaye writes in the liner notes, one can hear “the jazz of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, the immersion of Nina Simone, the Appalachian keen of Jean Ritchie, [and] the R\u0026amp;B and country that had to seep in as she made her way to New York.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eArmed with a long-necked banjo and a 12-stringed guitar, Dalton set herself apart from her peers with her distinctive, world-weary vocals. In the early 60s, she became a fixture in the Greenwich Village folk scene, interpreting traditional material, blues standards, and the songs of her contemporaries including Tim Hardin, Fred Neil, and Richard Tucker, whom she later married. Bob Dylan, meanwhile, was instantly taken with her artistry. “My favorite singer in the place was Karen Dalton,” he recalled in Chronicles: Volume One (Simon \u0026amp; Schuster, 2004). “Karen had a voice like Billie Holiday and played the guitar like Jimmy Reed.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThose who knew Dalton understood that she was not interested in bowing to the whims of the record industry. On stage, she rarely interacted with audience members. In the studio, she was equally as uncomfortable with the recording process. Her 1969 debut, It’s So Hard to Tell Who’s Going To Love You The Best, reissued by Light in the Attic in 2009, was captured on the sly when Dalton assumed that she was rehearsing songs. When Woodstock co-promoter Michael Lang approached Dalton about recording a follow-up for his new imprint, Just Sunshine, she was dubious to say the least. The album would have to be made on her own terms, in her own time. That turned out to be a six-month period at Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, NY.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eProducing the album was bassist Harvey Brooks, who played alongside Dalton on It’s So Hard to Tell Who’s Going To Love You The Best. Brooks, who prided himself on being “simple, solid and supportive,” understood Dalton’s process but was also willing to offer gentle encouragement and challenge the artist to push her creative bounds. “I tried to present her with a flexible situation,” he told Kaye. “I left the decisions to her, to determine the tempo, feel. She was very quiet, and I brought all of it to her; if she needed more, I’d present options. Everyone was sensitive to her. She was the leader.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDalton, who rarely performed her own compositions, selected a range of material to interpret—from traditionals like “Katie Cruel” and “Same Old Man” to Paul Butterfield’s “In My Own Dream” and Richard Tucker’s “Are You Leaving For The Country.” She also expanded upon her typical repertoire, peppering in such R\u0026amp;B hits as “When a Man Loves a Woman” and “How Sweet It Is.” In a departure from her previous LP, Dalton’s new recording offered fuller, more pop-forward arrangements, featuring a slew of talented studio musicians.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile 70s audiences may not have been ready for Dalton’s music, a new generation was about to discover her work. In the decades following her death, many artists would name Karen Dalton as an influence including Lucinda Williams, Joanna Newsom, Nick Cave, Angel Olsen, Devendra Banhart, Sharon Van Etten, Courtney Barnett, and Adele. In the recently acclaimed film documentary Karen Dalton: In My Own Time, Cave muses on Dalton’s unique appeal: “There’s a sort of demand made upon the listener,” he explains. “Whether you like it or not, you have to enter her world. Chet Helms, a key mover and shaker in the West Coast counterculture, spoke for many when he hailed the Lloyd quartet as “the first psychedelic jazz group.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is to Lloyd’s credit that, at least in the early stages of his adoption by the counterculture, he resisted dumbing down his music. The adoption stemmed from Lloyd’s espoused attitude to society, his media savvy, his sartorial style and his sheer nerve in playing jazz in the temples of rock culture. The title track is lusciously, greasily funky and stands in pretty stark contrast to the kind of airbrushed fusion that was in vogue at the time. “Sounds from the Village” is even better (and dirtier), showcasing Ranelin’s oily trombone gymnastics and a viciously fuzzed guitar solo. “Wife” features Phil’s singing and is oddly reminiscent of Frank Zappa’s writing on Sleep Dirt; an affecting, snaking melody topped off with a beautiful solo from the leader, whose playing here has the grace of Bob Brookmeyer coupled with the agility of George Lewis.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“He The One We All Knew” is the obligatory Coltrane tribute and is a trip into the kind of groove based free playing typical of Pharoah Sanders, though only really picks up when the band launch into post bop swing mode in the last six minutes or so, provoking another fine Ranelin solo. Bassist Ralph Armstrong is particularly strong here; his brief solo passages are a wonder of agility and tough lyricism that make me wonder why he’s not better known. Other highlights come from the mellifluous flute of Wendell Harrison. Beautiful stuff, and it’s good to know that Ranelin is still at work even now. Adele and her band pull it off right from the start as if it had been 1966 and it was time for a revolution to shake the dust from the old time jazz. In a perfect way she mixes classic American vocal jazz elements with playful and more free passages, Latin music and tribal African sounds in the lengthy and quite rhythm oriented “Man From Tanganyika” and makes the title track start with a mystical “Allahu akbar“ chant while it turns more and more into a dark and gloomy song with something like a psychedelic edge reminiscent of Pharoah Sanders on his early works. Wild rhythms from drums, percussions with tons of bells and chimes weave a thick groove carpet and conjure a magical atmosphere. As the year wound down, Giuffre wanted to document the trio once more, sensing its life was coming to an end. He composed the four-movement “Western Suite” with the trio’s strengths in mind, as a way of documenting how they had come together as a band during that year. The piece itself stands as a crowning achievement in a career that included discovering the talents of Steve Swallow and Paul Bley and making the truly revolutionary recording “Free Fall” for Columbia three years later. The roots of that thinking lie in this set. Jim Hall’s playing was dark, funky, ambiguous, sounding like drums and voices all at the same time — particularly in the fourth movement. Brookmeyer became the pace setter. His lines were played as stage settings for the other two players to dialogue and narrate against. Giuffre, ever the storyteller, advanced the improvisation angle and wrote his score so that each player had to stand on his own as part of the group; there were no comfort zones. Without a rhythm section, notions of interval, extensions, interludes, and so on were out the window. He himself played some of his most restrained yet adventurous solos in the confines of this trio and within the form of this suite. It swung like West Coast jazz, but felt as ambitious as Copland’s “Billy The Kid”.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe record is filled out with two other tunes, one of Eddie Durham’s, “Topsy”, and the final moment of mastery this band ever recorded, the already classic “Blue Monk”. The easy stroll of the front line with Brookmeyer’s trombone strutting New Orleans’ style is in sharp contrast to Giuffre’s clarinet playing. Which carries the bluesy melody through three harmonic changes before he solos and then plays three more. Hall keeps it all on track, and somehow the piece sounds very natural this way, though unlike “Monk”, there are no edges here — everything is rounded off. Even if some of his long, jive-talking intros can sound a little dated today, it’s clear in the outcome of the music that Kirk fed voraciously off the energy of the room. Most of the tracks are long (seven minutes or more), demonstrating Kirk’s wealth of soloing ideas in a variety of styles (and, naturally, on a variety of instruments). “Pedal Up” is a jaw-dropping demonstration of Kirk’s never-duplicated three-horns-at-once technique, including plenty of unaccompanied passages that simply sound impossible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere’s more quintessential Kirk weirdness on “Fly Town Nose Blues,” which heavily features an instrument called the nose flute, and the title track has a healthy dose of Kirk singing through his (traditional) flute. I recall hearing\/seeing the mighty Sonship with John McLaughlin’s One Truth band live at Central Park way back in 1979 and being knocked out by his drumming. “Raisha’s New Hip Dance” is a lovely piece that starts with some amazingly powerful and somewhat dark solo piano, with some strong two handed playing going in different directions and then winding down to somber conclusion, then building back up once again. The final piece is called “Dark Tree” which is a great work that features a colossal, McCoy-like repeating line that is most hypnotic. The trio explodes in waves together, an immensely propulsive circular current at the center of the storm. Roberto Miranda takes an astonishing, fleet-fingered contrabass solo and then Sonship again provides a cosmic gong, cymbals and drum solo. This is a momentous offering from start to finish. Teaming with a cast of musicians that includes bassist Cecil McBee, flutist James Spaulding, Roy Haynes, Lonnie Liston Smith, Richard Davis, and Sanders (listed here as “Little Rock”), etc. Thomas’ patented yodel is in fine shape here, displayed alongside his singular lyric style and scat singing trademark. The set begins with a shorter, more lyrical version of Thomas’ signature tune “The Creator Has a Master Plan,” with the lyric riding easy and smooth alongside the yodel, which bubbles up only in the refrains. It’s a different story on his own “One,” with Davis’ piano leading the charge and Spaulding blowing through the center of the track, Thomas alternates scatting and his moaning, yodeling, howling, across the lyrics, through them under them and in spite of them. It’s an intense ride and one that sets up the glorious “Echoes.” This tune is Thomas at his most spiritual and uplifting, carrying the mysterious drift of his tune entwined with Spaulding’s flute and a set of Pan pipes, fluttering in and out of the mix before his wail comes to the fore as a solo. The end of side one reaches into Thomas’ past (he sang with everyone from Count Basie to Grant Green and Mary Lou Williams) for a highly original read of Horace Silver’s classic “Song for My Father.” Thomas imbues the tune with so much emotion, it’s a wonder he can keep it under wraps. Side two is more free from in nature with “Damn Nam,” a near rant, but one possessed with melodic vision and harmonic invention with this band. There’s also the deeply moving “Malcolm’s Gone,” a co-write between Thomas and Sanders that features the latter’s gorgeous blowing, hard and true in the middle of the mix, and a wildly spiritual Eastern vibe coming through in the improvisation. It’s the longest track on the record, and one of the most criminally ignored in Thomas’ long career. The album closes with Bell and Houston’s “Let the Rain Fall on Me.” It’s a shimmering straight jazz number with a beautiful piano solo by Smith. It sends out a visionary album out on a sweet, soulful note. It also was a hallmark for a unique style of the music, an urban rhythm \u0026amp; blues infused contemporary jazz that stood tall for both listeners and dancers during the tail-end of the disco movement. Woodard was in his prime, determined that his idea was singular, and went beyond soul-jazz into a realm where only he could claim ownership. With guitarist Robert Lowe and saxophonist Allan Barnes, who would both go on to national acclaim as leaders, the Organization was a powerhouse in live performance not to be denied, and for sure a solid sending crowd pleaser. A much better recording than his studio cult classic Saturday Night Special, this live set laid the groundwork for the continuation of Woodard’s career for decades to come and showed his fellow Detroiter’s that better days lay ahead. Where the title track is happy and a bit more commercial than the rest with its slinky, straight, finger-popping, sublime beat and seductive vocal line, “Disco Tease” prances along in a hard rock vein with conga accents from Lorenzo Brown and chicken scratch, dramatic guitar chords from Lowe. “Down Lowe” is a concrete, fatback groove from the guitarist, while “Djarum” turns the wick down in a slow, sexy nightshade visage, with Kerry Campbell’s soprano sax expanding the horn section with Woodard’s organ in stretched out phrases. The appropriately titled “Theme in Search of a Sports Spectacular” is the killer track, as trumpeter Marcus Belgrave joins the band in an Olympic sprint, an irresistible melody that is catchy, infectious, memorable, and anthematic as any warrior clarion call to battle in the athletic arena. This driven, tenacious, forceful piece of music still stands the test of time for its ferocious attitude and champion-like strut. This is firmly in Grover Washington Junior territory with a liberal sprinkling of oh so tasteful strings. The Master’s sound is full and mighty as ever.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith the radio track out of the way, it is business as hoped for and Newborn is a Sanders composition that burns with intensity. The power of his solo is as good as anything he has produced and he runs over the full span of the tenor’s range and onwards into territory lesser-known or explored by 99% of sax players.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSam Cooke’s You Send Me is treated with reverence and respect, with Pharoah delivering a sensitive and heartfelt rendition and ending with some extraordinary phonics, which we will meet again on later albums. Kelly’s accompaniment complements Sander’s playing before he receives his own space for a shimmering yet restrained solo which discloses what this non-pianist assumes to be an agile right hand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnswer Me My Love is an early 50’s ballad with a fascinating back story. On its initial release in post-war Britain, covers of this fine melody stirred sufficient controversy for the song to be banned by the \u003cspan class=\"caps\"\u003eBBC\u003c\/span\u003e. What led to it being barred from broadcast on the Light Programme and treated like Anarchy For The UK, Wet Dream and Give Ireland Back To The Irish? I can reveal that the reason for this draconian action was that the original version was entitled ‘Answer Me, My Lord’. In the olden days, it seems that a direct appeal to God was considered to be blasphemous- especially if set in a secular or selfish. Further research indicates that Nat King Cole made the most celebrated recording and that Bob Dylan used to sing it live in the 1990s, presumably during his overtly Christian phase. Anyway, it is a grand tune.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePharoah went on to record at least three studio versions of his great anthem You’ve Got To Have Freedom but the one here is the earliest incarnation that I am aware of. It is also the most restrained treatment of the theme, although Pharoah’s solo shows his ability to play with fire and power over the entire range of the horn.
