Foster, on nylon string guitar, and husband Victor Herrero, accompanying on Portuguese guitar, together weave intimate readings of songs spanning Foster’s songwriting career including selections from recent albums “This Coming Gladness” (2008) and “I’m a Dreamer” (2013) and back to Born Heller (2004).

Foster’s new route is a free, chromatic music, a tuneful montana of mind—an expansive harmonic space dominated by Rif mountain on the horizon. As highwater as the music is, as broad the stylistic palette of the musicians, the music really exists in service of the lyrics. Two of the songs on No More Lamps are poems by Rudyard Kipling and James Joyce given musical settings by Foster. The rest arguably are musical settings of her own poems strengthened in a fiery crucible of guitars (and on 2 tracks Gyða Valtýsdóttir’s cello) in which dissonant notes bend and quaver as wirefork embers, dying without affecting the glowing tonal fire which unites contrary forces in a Moroccan speakeasy.

She and Herrero have performed, for an audience of burros, concerts of Federico Garcia Lorca poems set to music. Of Course You Are is solo album number twenty four (!) by the tireless Guided By Voices auteur. Meticulously constructed, Of Course You Are is overstuffed with hooky tunes, riffs aplenty and skewed/skewering lyrics.

Pity the poor rock critic who tries to keep up with Robert Pollard. If your magnificent-opus-listening time is circumscribed, play track #6, “I Can Illustrate” three times in a row. The wizardry of Pollard’s craft is easy to overlook on a cursory spin. Three listens and you’ll be hooked, lined, and sinkered.

To some extent, the new solo album is a natural outgrowth of Pollard’s 2015 work with Ricked Wicky; and to some extent it’s a return to early-2000s Guided By Voices, with its combination of instrumental virtuosity and Pollard’s uniquely oblique approach to songwriting. All of the instruments on Of Course You Are were played by Ricked Wicky’s Nick Mitchell, who also recorded/produced the record, and Mitchell’s evident musicianship lifts the material to another sonic level without over-polishing. The instrumental palette has been broadened — discreet flourishes of strings, horns, piano (etc.) occasionally bring to mind baroque rock classics by the likes of Love and Cardinal. Which is not to say this is chamber pop. These songs are all determinedly guitar-driven, however textured, and rock as hard as anything Pollard’s done to date. Mitchell’s occasional virtuosic solos are concise, but the guy can shred, and when he does, he does. (We refer the listener to the exquisite “Promo Brunette” for illustration.) Mitchell is a heretofore hidden gem discovered by Pollard in their mutual Dayton, OH hometown.

As tuneful as you’d expect from anything issuing from Pollard’s pen, Of Course You Are runs the usual gamut of Pop, Prog, Psych, and even Punk-oriented tracks. His vocals are impeccable, his phrasing as sharp as ever – he seems invigorated by the collaborative juice provided by Mitchell, who himself has clearly been liberated by the opportunity to take the reins in the studio, and delivers in (aces of) spades.

Taking nothing away from any of Pollard’s previous co-conspirators, Mitchell’s inspired, unmuddied production and precise playing on Of Course You Are hits all the right marks – underlining the direct emotional tug of “That’s The Way You Gave It To Me” with melancholic Court of the Crimson King-era mellotron, providing a swirling psychedelic backdrop not too far removed from Mr. Blue Sky-era ELO on “Losing It,” and punching up the album’s rock-hard opener “My Daughter Yes She Knows.” ‘Long Live Instant Pandemonium’s" classic rock riffs contrast the poignant strings on ‘Come And Listen,’ while ‘Contemporary Man (He’s Our Age)’ foregrounds Pollard’s vocal musings over kinetic percussion and electronics (and more strings).

Taken altogether, the twelve concise song-slabs on Pollard’s first album of 2016 (you and I both know it won’t be his last) make for both an auspicious start to the New Year of Bob and a welcome harbinger of great things to come. This impromptu recording had occurred because the band refused to cancel their first Los Angeles live gig, at Madame Wong’s, when the band (Giant Sandworms) had broken up days before in Tucson. Instead, Howe headed out anyway with Scott, the newest member who’d only been in the band for about a year, after band mainstays Billy Sed and Dave Seger reasonably decided ‘enough was enough’ following a rough and tenuous year spent in the lower east side of NYC attempting to further the band circa 1981/82.

Tucsonan Winston Watson, (who would go on to tour with Bob Dylan in the 90s, as well as Alice Cooper, Warren Zevon etc ) was already living in Los Angeles and was brave/kind enough to jump in for the live date with no rehearsal. The result was so sparked with adrenalin, that the trio set up an impromptu studio session the next day to attempt to capture the sonic thrust on tape. The total cost of the day and a half recording was $400 including one 1” reel of 30 minute tape.

When Enigma Records offered to release the album they requested another 15 minutes of music to make it a full LP. Ron Goudie was then called in to oversee the extra recordings at a Venice, CA studio called Mad Dog with Eric Westfall engineering. Tommy Larkins, who had been on the previous country punk album of Howe’s “The Band of … Blacky Ranchette” came in to drum for those last 3 songs. It was there when Howe borrowed an amp that had been stored at the studio did he discover the bolster of a tube amp and his world changed. The amp was a slightly modified Fender Twin Reverb owned by Robbie Krieger of The Doors.

30 some years later, now that the band had been put to sleep indefinitely, those very first songs had begun creeping into the last Giant Sand tours. It somehow seemed appropriate to give them another shot with the proper amp just to see what they could’ve been. What made the idea more approachable was the availability of both original drummers living back in Tucson.

The first attempt came last summer with both Winston & Tommy and Thøger Lund on bass, as well as the 2 newest members, 29 year old Gabriel Sullivan and 23 year old Annie Dolan on double neck guitars. The sound was insane.
The funny part was Gabriel, who engineered and mixed the session, gave it an intentional 80s production sound. Howe later explained to Gabe he had been at war with that production trend since those first original recordings. So they all tried it again at Christmas time, this time with a newly discovered Fender 30 amp that had only been in production from 1980 – 1983. This new re-recording of that first album now sounds like it should’ve sounded. It was re-done for $400 and the same day and a half session time as the original. Scott Garber even drove up from Austin TX with his fretless to play so that the album is literally the originally line up for at least half of the songs. Surely, some things are in our DNA or even early childhood, as Josephine Foster’s roots in opera manifest themselves as much as any other influence in this organic song cycle. Sure, guitarist Brian Goodman may have heard Richard Thompson before, but his alchemical and molten guitar spray is purely his own, in tunings and intervals still not meant for normal humans to understand, mostly because his 2004 guts were poured into every sublime note (I think even Brian himself never even understood how good he was). That fiery emotion is also in every nuance of Foster’s songs— like life, there’s disquieting, jagged moments of unease, and there’s calm both before and after the storm. There are moments of utter gentleness along the journey—-because yes, every concept album should be a voyage, and this is one everyone should take.
[[Selling Points]]

New from Fire Records

[[Catalog Number]]FIRELP426[[Artist]]Josephine Foster
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0080/6417/2096/files/tmp_2F1569626792814-dj33irni22v-1d9a8f3802479447691e7ac4a53517dc_2FJosephine_2BFoster_2Band_2Bthe_2BSupposed_2B-_2BAll_2Bthe_2BLeaves_2BCOVER.jpg?v=1690527380
