Screwball comedies heralded a new area of emancipation in the 1930s: strong, sexy, funny, beautiful, adventurous women entered the stage – uniting glamour and emancipation. ‘Talkies’ were still young, and a generation of young actresses was hungry to show everything they’d got – like speaking, singing and dancing – talents that didn’t count in the days of silent film. These screwball comedy movies were spirited, subtly humorous, and peopled by women who had everything the female audience could dream of: repartee, intelligence, sex appeal, success. They dazzled with wordplay and repartee, mingled with a sexiness born of self-confidence. Thirties and forties Screwball Comedies are still among the finest, that’s why so many remakes are produced. The songs on this CD reflect that spirit: famous Hollywood legends and extraordinary singers from 1927-1959.
