Rare groove hides itself everywhere. Pop a la Catalana and its incredible selection crafted by Òscar Dalmau (DJ Phil Musical) invites you to plunge into a hot bed of sixties Catalan music, ripe with fabulous and curious record productions embracing a whole spectrum of very different styles. Soul, beat, bossa, jazz, Latin funk and pop sweat it out to the rhythm of this vibrant scene, made up of mysterious mod combos, magnificent crooners, bewitching jazz divas, queens of Iberic variety music and young pop lolitas.
Taking their lead from the French ‘yéyé’ stars of the 60s, a great deal adopted and customised the songs of the era, draping them with their own languages and colours. The result? Magnificent and often very personal covers of classics from artists as varied as Allen Toussaint, the Beatles, Mongo Santamaria, Serge Gainsbourg, Tom Jones, Nat King Cole, João Gilberto, Burt Bacharach, Petula Clark and Claude Nougaro. As for original compositions, each maps out its own flamboyant musical landscape, pulsating under the effects of incredible soul, Latin or Brazilian rhythms. Signed to the labels Edigsa and Concentric, it all illustrates the fleeting limits of independent expression prevalent under the Franco regime, proudly reclaiming the rights carefree expression and definitively evoking the image of a creative, proud and still independent Catalonia.
