Sunil Dev
The Music of Sunil Dev
HS010
- Released: June 15, 2009
Sunil Dev was discovered in 2003 by renowned French producer and world music aficionado Martin Meissonnier. Then 25 he had been playing Indian classical music on his bass reed flute at Hindu festivals and ceremonies throughout Nepal and had studied with Prem Autari. Martin soon returned to Nepal and recorded this album of Sunil playing 7 improvisations based on traditional ragas, and it has been released to great acclaim. He has gone on to perform across Europe to large festival crowds and to study under the master Prasad Chaurasia in Bombay and is now a master himself.
This album features the meditative and intricate lines that Sunil Dev has become known for. He is set solo and sounds as if he could be alone in the hills of Nepal, with his flute’s voice bouncing off the walls of a temple on festival day. For those who are more familiar with North Indian players, Sunil’s style may come as a revelation. His sound has a raw untamed edge and a freedom that is liberating for the listener. Fans of Indian classical music will enjoy this fresh perspective on the tradition-unbounded, free, and fully improvisational-when Sunil Dev is by himself he is then free to fully explore the depth of the ragas
