Monnette Sudler was one of the most unique voices to come out of Philidelphia’s Jazz scene in the 1970’s. She has performed the world over with such legendary performers as Philly Joe Jones, Hugh Masekela, and Grover Washington Jr. and is well known to lovers of soul-jazz for both her unique guitar style and her voices sweet gruffness which drips heartache. On her new outing she mixes her Grant Greenish soul-jazz guitar with her raspy indie-soul voice to great affect. This record was recorded in Paris with such heavyweight Parisian players as John Betsch (drums), Arnaud Biscay (drums), Peter Giron (bass), Arthur Simonyi (violin) and David Neerman (vibes) and touches on some famous tunes by her personal heroes. Included are spectacular covers of the Bill Wither’s song “Use Me” and the tune “Infant Eyes” as made famous by Wayne Shorter. However, far from staying inside convention, Sudler reaches into new sonic territory and develops her own unique aural signature through the use of more effects then on her previous work. This is a great mix of instrumentals and vocal showcases from a legendary artist, all which give a warm vibe that exudes the authentic spiritual feel of those early 70’s soul-jazz sessions.
