Anthony Joseph & The Spasm Band are back again and they’ve decided to come a little bit harder this time around. With the addition of David Neerman on Vibes, Joseph Bowie on Trombone and Keziah Jones on Guitar the whole band steps up its swagger and grit. Anthony Joseph leads the band with all the mystical bravado we’ve come to expect as he mixes speaking and singing to recite his spiritual afro-cosmic poetry. Those who have heard the Spasm band’s previous work will be familiar with the Afro-Soul-Jazz sound but it has definitely gotten funkier this time. Intermixed with the percolating percussion and the Ayersesque vibes are bold punctuated horn hits and distorted guitar solos. These are all hallmarks of a confident band in charge of its sound and ready to make a bold statement. It’s hard to pick a single stand out track as there are so many varied and powerful cuts. There is the Fela meets Temptations sprawling jam that is “Jungle” or the more Caribbean styled “Cutless.” Bowie really get’s to cut loose on and go into some free jazz territory on a few tracks and it’s great to hear him and some of the other players ( David Neerman, Adrian Owusu) being given some space to stretch out. This is a powerful album full of confident musicians who have a definite message and are coming together to form a cohesive unit. Prepare to be knocked out.
