THE SATURDAY KNIGHTS LOVE DONUTS … AND KOMO TV!

Perhaps you’ve heard but this weekend our favorite crazed trio, The Saturday Knights are hosting a wee little 2nd Annual Donut Eating Contest at the Top Pot Donuts on 5th, downtown.  And what exactly does a Saturday Knights hosted donut eating contest entail?  Six contestants, two TSK songs, and just as many donuts as they can shove in their mouths before the songs end - and remember, no barfing.  The whole event kicks off at 2pm on Saturday the 26th (this Saturday for the calendar impaired) and if you’re interested whatsoever in the chance of proving yourself as the top donut eater, you should roll on down, participants are chosen from the crowd.

And by the way, did we mention that Nancy Guppy of Almost Live! fame is hosting the whole (hole?) damn thing?  ‘Cause she is.  Donuts, Nancy Guppy, THE SATURDAY KNIGHTS - we now must change our collective pants.

So, we know you’re excited about TSK and donuts and NANCY GUPPY (a trifecta made in heaven), but you know who else is?  KOMO Television.  Yup, you read that right, KOMO Television (home of Steve Pool, sweet sweet Steve Pool) shot on down to Top Pot to record a bit that’ll air Thursday at 4:00 in the afternoon.  If you’re not already excited about the chance to shove as many cake-y delicious donuts in your gullet, this pristine broadcast will certainly, er, wet your palette.

DETAILS AFTER THE JUMP!

THE BLAKES ON DAYTROTTER!

Hopefully if you’re perusing this website, searching for new music, digging through our extensive back catalog, then you’ve done yourself a favor and checked out Daytrotter.  Sean Moeller has been bringing the best and the brightest bands in the business to the tiny town of Rock Island, Illinois to sit a spell in his studio there and record alternate takes of their popular songs.  Oft times bands will bring a handful of unreleased material, maybe even a cover or two.

Bands like Bon Iver, Bodies of Water, and The Dodos (and the list goes on…) have all laid down tracks for Daytrotter, and now our very own The Blakes have been lucky enough to sit down with the folks over there to lay down a few old favorites.

Four classic Blakes’ tracks all re-worked and re-recorded in the intimate space that is the Daytrotter studios.  Check it out right HERE.

RODRIGUEZ PLAYS FIRST EVER U.S. SHOW

Rodriguez, oh Rodriguez. Perhaps you haven’t heard of internationally renowned, Detroit-native Sixto Rodriguez yet. Maybe you haven’t been given the opportunity to sample the fine, fine music that graces his amazing debut Cold Fact. You might not even know about how Large Professor and Nas sampled his classic hit “Sugarman” many years ago.

But you will. Light In The Attic is re-issuing his absolutely stellar 1970 debut Cold Fact (August 19th, save the date ’cause the lines going to be craaaaaaazy) and the world will soon know the magic that is Rodriguez. Drop down to the bottom of this post for a free download of “Sugarman”.

For now, be excited about this: for the first time ever, Rodriguez will play a live show in the United States of America. The man has been playing music for almost half a century, and now, for the first time ever, he’ll be playing, sunglasses and all, live in Montauk, New York (Long Island) this Saturday, the 26th of July.

That’s right, you East Coast folk are the luckiest people on Earth this weekend. Get your friends, scrounge up a little gas money, buy a six pack of road sodas and get to the Surf Lodge in Montauk, New York this Saturday for the first ever live appearance on American soil of RODRIGUEZ.

WE’RE BAAAAAAAAACCCKKKKK AND PRETTIER!

It’s been a while since we’ve regularly posted, well, anything on this page, but we were faced with mounting technical difficulties and had to bring it back to basics for a while.  Luckily for us, due to the diligent effort of a certain web-saavy young lady we’re prettier, and more accesible than ever.  A few changes:

1.  No more linking to the news page.  The home page is the news page and the news page is the home page.  We just thought you’d like to be a little closer to all the amazing things occuring in this hallowed halls of Light In The Attic.

2.  A music player!  Now instead of bouncing around from artist page to artist page (which still his its merits, such as free downloads) you can listen to the majority of our amazing cadre of original and reissue artists just by clicking on the grey box to your right.  Oh, and if you’re enjoying yourself but have accomplished your goal at lightintheattic.net, it’s okay, just pop out that little player and you can carry us throughout your daily cyber-chores.

3.  Album covers.  Look, no seriously, LOOK!  All those album covers on the left side of the page aren’t just for decoration (though they sure are purdy), they’re functional links to our many assorted releases over the years.  Dazzling!

So there you go.  Our first step in what will eventually be an entire site overhaul.  We like it, and of course, we hope you do too.

Harvey Brooks’ Amazing Blog

Bossman Matt Sullivan is currently shirking responsibility in the sunny Southwest, and on his little journey of irresponsibility, Mr. Sullivan was lucky enough to have a private sit down session with none other than Harvey Brooks.  You might know Harvey as the producer of Karen Dalton’s amazing In My Own Time, but this travelling bassist was oh so much more.  Brooks played on records for Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, The Doors, and the list goes on and on and on.

Luckily for us, Brooks has a video blog he’s been doing as of late, where he picks individual records he worked on gives his perspective on them.  They’re brilliant, funny, modest and packed with stories you’ve never heard about some of the great musicians of our day.

You can watch all of them right HERE or just snag a preview below:

A PICTURE EXPLOSION! TSK @ THE END SUMMER HOUSE, THE BLAKES @ SASQUATCH …

Summer has only just started and our bands have already been jump-kicking the shit out of the touring circuit.  The Saturday Knights, in support of their highly acclaimed new album Mingle, rocked The End Beachhouse at Alki on the Fourth of July, and The Blakes (on a brief respite from their intercontinental jet-setting) rocked Sasquatch.

We were there, camera in hand, snapping shots.  Here’s a preview.  You can see the rest right HERE:

THE SATURDAY KNIGHTS, NEW ALBUM, LIVE SHOWS, STREAMING LISTENING PARTY

There are big weeks, there are gigantic weeks, and there are absolutely fucking humongous weeks.

And The Saturday Knights are about to have an absolutely fucking humongous week.  Why you may ask?

1.  Tomorrow, June 24th (there’s something else going on that night too…) The Saturday Knights will drop their absolutely amazing debut LP, Mingle (featuring the likes of famed Nirvana producer Jack Endino, Kim Thayil of Soundgarden, The Dap-Kings, The Muscle Shoal Horns).  It’s a huge, fun album that breaks genre boundaries while consistenly plastering a shit-eating smile on your face.  It’ll be the Seattle summer record of the year - no doubt in our minds.  You can pre-order it right here.

2.  If you’re interested in checking out the album before purchasing (though you can trust us on this one) two of our favorite blogs, KEXP and My Old Kentucky Blog will be co-hosting a streaming listening party for the album.  Each blog will stream one half of this dynamic video, as well as present for the first time ever, the amazing video for “‘45″ (featuring Jack Endino on drums).  Again, tomorrow this amazing blogs will be giving you a chance to hear the album for the first time, well, ever.

3.  Tomorrow, June 24th (we said it was a huge week, didn’t we?) The Saturday Knights will be opening for the world famous Wu-Tang giant, The RZA at Showbox SODO.  Though this could be construed as cool enough, TSK has brought together a large group of talented musicians (including members of Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground and Wild Orchid Children) to form an eleven piece back-up band featuring singers, guitarists, bassists, and a huge horn section.  It will be magical and you do not want to miss it.

4.  But if you must, then you can’t miss Friday’s CD release party at Nectar.  Not only will The Saturday Knights be performing their second show with a full eleven-piece band, but the world famous Budos Band will be opening for them.  Yup, The Saturday Knights, an eleven piece band, and a performance by The Budos Band - this show is going to be legendary.

So their you go, you want The Saturday Knights?  You got the fucking Saturday Knights.

THE BLAKES W/ THE BROKEN WEST TOMORROW NIGHT AT NEUMOS!

The Blakes have had pretty madcap year.  Tours through Europe with amazing bands like The Kills, The Gossip, and Pete and The Pirates.  A steady stream of national touring that’s taken them coast to coast on several occasions.  Sasquatch, Sunfest, Lollapalooza, etc.

But you know what?  Seattle is always there home.

And oh what a homecoming it shall be.  Tomorrow night, Tuesday the 24th, our favorite raucous trio will glide in to Neumos with rock-pop favorites The Broken West in tow.  Those of you who missed their prior performance at Chop Suey (oh how we don’t envy you), now is your chance.  The Blakes put on a high energy shit-kicking slap-in-the-face of a show, and we promise you it is not to be missed.
